the Blue envelope

That winter, the family decided to clean the old room at the back of the house.
The room felt like a place time had forgotten.
Boxes were stacked on top of one another, along with old clothes, family photographs, schoolbooks, and things no one remembered keeping—but no one could bring themselves to throw away.
Layan walked in carrying a box.
Maryam, who was visiting that day, looked around and said:
— This room needs more cleaning than my room.
Layan replied:
— Your room doesn't need cleaning. It needs an archaeological expedition.
Maryam glared at her.
— Get out of here.
They both laughed.
Then a blue envelope slipped out of one of the boxes.
Layan bent down and picked it up.
She stopped.
Her name was written on it.
Layan.
In old handwriting.
She called out:
— Mom?
Her mother's voice came from outside.
— What?
— Is this for me?
Her mother was silent for a moment.
Then she asked:
— Where did you find it?
Layan knew from the question alone that something was not right.
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
She read:
«“When you grow older, you will think you were searching for many things.
Don't believe that too quickly.
Perhaps you were searching for only one thing, but you never knew its name.
You were searching for a place where you could feel that you didn't have to prove anything.
If you find this letter, look for the notebook.
You will understand when the time comes.”»
Layan turned the paper over.
On the back, there was another sentence:
«“Some things reach us late because they were waiting for us to become capable of understanding them.”»
There was no name.
No date.
Layan raised her head.
Maryam was looking at her.
— What?
Maryam said:
— Nothing.
— Your face says there is something.
— Your face says we're about to enter a mystery movie.
Layan smiled, but the uneasiness did not leave her.
That night, she couldn't fall asleep easily.
She wasn't thinking only about the letter.
She was thinking about something else.
Something that had happened before she even knew about it.
Something that had made someone write her a letter and hide it for years.
And for the first time, Layan felt that her life contained a page she had never read.

A question for you…
If you found a letter written to you years ago, would you search for the notebook it mentioned—or would you leave the past untouched?
