"When Silence Breaks"

She was not as she had been before.

Silence was no longer mere moments of quiet… it had become her dwelling.

At the school, she sat alone, looking at the empty chair beside her…

Her "friend's" chair.

Everyone had grown accustomed to her absence…

Except her.

That night, she held the red rose that had been placed on her friend's place.

She took nothing else.

She whispered:

"Forgive me… I couldn't say goodbye to you."

And her tears poured forth, in a silence louder than any scream.

She was not as she had been before…

The silence that had once been a comfort had now become a weight pressing on her chest.

Even the sounds around her—the laughter of the schoolgirls, the teacher's explanation, the whispers in the corners—all seemed distant… as if they were happening in another world to which she did not belong.

She sat at her desk, her eyes never leaving the empty chair beside her.

That chair…

Which had never been empty.

It had been her "friend's" place.

Her friend used to fill it with life… with laughter, with incessant chatter, with little teasing that used to annoy her and make her laugh at the same time.

But now…

There was nothing.

She slowly extended her hand toward the desk and ran her fingers along its edge, as if searching for some trace… for the remnants of a presence that was no longer there.

She whispered unconsciously:

"If you were here… everything would be easier."

But no one answered.

When the lesson ended, the schoolgirls hurried out, talking and laughing…

But she remained seated.

She no longer liked going out with anyone.

Every path led her to the same emptiness.

After a few minutes, she finally stood up and walked slowly through the corridors.

The walls seemed taller, the steps heavier, as if the place itself had changed.

When she reached the school gate, she stopped.

She hesitated…

Then she took a path she had not walked in days.

The road was quiet…

The air was a little cold, and the sun was leaning toward sunset.

She walked step by step until she arrived.

The same place where they used to sit.

She froze in place for a moment, as if her feet refused to move forward…

But her heart pushed her on.

She walked among the trees until she stopped before an engraved name…

Her friend's name.

Her breath trembled.

She knelt slowly and looked at the name for a long time…

As if she were trying to comprehend the truth anew.

"This isn't real…" she whispered.

"It can't be real…"

But silence was the only answer.

She placed her trembling hand on the earth, then took a red rose from her bag.

It was the same red rose she had placed there on the day she gave it to her.

She had not been able to leave it there.

She said in a broken voice:

"Do you remember when you told me not to be sad?"

She smiled a faint smile through her tears:

"I am sad… so sad."

A tear fell onto the earth.

Then another…

Until she could no longer stop.

"Why did you leave?"

The question finally escaped… in a trembling voice.

"You used to say we would grow up together… that we would travel… that we…"

Her voice broke off.

She clutched the red rose tightly, until her hands trembled.

"I didn't say goodbye to you…"

"I didn't tell you not to go…"

"I didn't know it was the last day…"

She closed her eyes tightly, as if trying to stop everything inside her.

A long time passed…

Or perhaps mere moments… she no longer knew.

But when she opened her eyes, sunset had begun.

She looked at the red rose between her hands…

Then at the place.

She hesitated…

But she did not leave it.

Instead she held it close, as if it were the only thing left to her.

She stood slowly and wiped her tears with the back of her hand wrapped in bandages.

She looked at the name one last time and whispered:

"I will come to you… but not today."

Then she turned around and took her first steps away…

But this time, it was not only silence that accompanied her—

But a memory… and pain… and a red rose still pulsing with something not yet ended.
